After birth many women report that their muscles “feel numb,” and symptoms of urinary or fecal incontinence, prolapses, or pain before, during, or after intercourse may occur.
The postpartum pelvic physical therapy appointment is a time to (re)discover your body and your deepest, most intimate muscles. It is a safe space to share your anguishes or to talk about your symptoms without taboos.
The most frequent reasons for seeking this consultation include:
- Management of pain symptoms in the abdominal, lower back, pelvic region, among others.
- Evaluation and adaptation of strategies used in the exercise practice (breathing pattern, pressure management) and/or the development of a personalized exercise plan according to your needs and goals.
- Information about the pelvic floor: know it and take care of it after birth. The pelvic floor provides support for organs such as the bladder, ovaries, and uterus. It is also responsible for the control of our sphincters, i.e., responsible for continence, and plays a key role in sexual function. A functional pelvic floor is one that is able to contract and distend according to the needs of the body. In this consultation not only the structures that belong to the pelvic floor are evaluated, but also those related to it (abdominal region, diaphragm, among others). It is also taught good pelvic health habits, and which signs and symptoms may indicate pelvic floor dysfunction, so that situations like these can be prevented or quickly diagnosed and treated.
- Diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction, which can be the cause of symptoms such as severe menstrual pain; recurrent urinary infections; urine or gas/stool leakage; feeling of constant pressure or heaviness in the pelvic area; pain in the pelvic area; pain or burning sensation before, during or after sexual intercourse; pain or burning sensation when urinating/pain when defecating; chronic constipation; hemorrhoids and/or air leakage from the vagina.
Physiotherapy consultations can be performed at UTERUS and at home. Consultation packs are available for those situations that require more regular monitoring.
