The pelvic physiotherapy consultation can be, above all, an opportunity for the (pre)teenager to discover and get to know her body in a relaxed and oriented way, in a safe environment to talk about topics such as sexuality, menstruation, or urine leakage during exercise, without taboos.
On the other hand, puberty and adolescence are characterized by important growth peaks, and it is frequent during these periods that some muscular and postural imbalances occur, since the growth rate between different parts of the body can be very different. Additionally, many (pre)teenagers engage in activities or sports that involve repeated movements, constantly stimulating the same muscle groups.
In the case of impact sports (trampoline, gymnastics, basketball, and others) there is a constant challenge of pressure on the pelvic floor, which can make it more susceptible to dysfunction. The pelvic floor provides support for organs such as the bladder, ovaries, and uterus. It is also responsible for controlling our sphincters, i.e., responsible for continence, and plays a key role in sexual function. A functional pelvic floor is one that can contract and distend according to the body’s needs.
The most frequent reasons for (pre)teenagers to seek this consultation include:
- Pelvic floor information: knowing it and caring for it. The knowledge of the body’s structures, from anatomy to function, is a powerful health tool. In this consultation good pelvic health habits are also made known, and which signs and symptoms may indicate pelvic floor dysfunction, so that situations like these can be prevented or quickly diagnosed and treated.
- Management of pain in the abdominal, lower back, pelvic region, among others.
- Development of good postural control for the challenges of everyday life and for sports practice.
- Evaluation and adaptation of strategies used in the practice of exercise (breathing pattern, pressure management), which can be determinant in the appearance of symptoms, especially in the case of high-impact exercise.
- Diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions, which can be the cause of severe menstrual pain; pain or inability to insert a tampon; pain or burning sensation before, during or after sexual intercourse; leakage of urine or gas/feces; recurrent urinary infections; pain or burning sensation when urinating/pain when defecating; chronic constipation; hemorrhoids: pain in the pelvic area; sensation of constant pressure or weight in the pelvic area and/or loss of air through the vagina.
Physiotherapy consultations can be performed at UTERUS and at home. Consultation packs are available for those situations that require more regular monitoring.
